Happiness: Ancient Indic Perspectives (forthcoming) RX60013

The course seeks to introduce the students, in the context of Hindu, Buddhis, Jaina, Sikh and Charvaka frameworks, to the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings as well as specific practices that emerged from them which related to happiness. It will first present them with the fundamental concepts of each of these schools of thoughts followed by an understanding of their salient characteristics related to happiness and wellbeing. It will then offer them the scope to study certain typical practices of each tradition that are believed to create happiness in order to encourage dialogue and discussion on the different perspectives of this most sought after experience. Furthermore, besides giving students a theoretical understanding of the subject, this course will highlight the applicational aspects in one’s daily life and lay emphasis on the scope for research in these areas.
